HP laptop won't turn on? How we work out if it's the charger, battery or board

No lights, no fan, nothing on the screen. A dead HP has several possible causes and most are fixable. How we diagnose a no-power HP in Perth, and what each outcome usually means.

Nothing is scarier than a laptop that gives you nothing back. No lights, no fan spin, no chime, just a black screen and silence. Owners assume the worst, a dead motherboard, a laptop for the bin. In our experience on the Perth bench, a genuinely dead board is actually one of the less common causes. Most no-power HPs are a charger, a port, or a battery, not the board itself.

The checks worth doing before you bring it in

A few minutes at home can save you a trip, or at least help us diagnose faster:

  • Try a different power outlet and cable if you have one. Chargers fail more often than the laptops they charge, and a worn HP barrel connector or USB-C cable is a common, cheap cause.
  • Look at the charging light. Most HPs show a small LED near the port or on the charger brick itself when power is flowing. No light at all points at the charger or the port; a light that’s on but the laptop still won’t wake points elsewhere.
  • Hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds with the charger unplugged, then plug in and try again. This forces a hard reset of residual power in the board and occasionally clears a stuck state on its own.
  • Check the port itself for a wobble or bent pin, especially on older barrel-style HP chargers. A port that’s loose or has been knocked will interrupt charging even when the cable is fine.

If none of that brings it back, stop trying variations and get it looked at. Repeatedly plugging and unplugging a fault you can’t see rarely helps and occasionally makes a marginal connection worse.

What we actually find, in order of likelihood

A dead or dying charger. HP power bricks and cables take a beating, coiled tightly, stepped on, chewed by pets, and they simply wear out. This is the best possible outcome: a new genuine or quality-matched charger and the laptop works exactly as before.

A faulty DC jack or charging port. Common on HPs that get plugged and unplugged constantly, or that have been dropped with the cable still attached. The connector cracks away from the board internally, so charging becomes intermittent or stops altogether even though the cable is fine. This is board-level repair work, we resolder or replace the port and jack rather than quoting a whole new motherboard.

A dead battery holding the system down. Occasionally a battery drops to a state where the laptop won’t boot even on mains power, because HP’s power management refuses to start until the battery reports sane values. Pulling a swollen or badly failed cell (where the model allows) and running on charger alone is a fast way to confirm this.

A failed power circuit or charging IC on the motherboard. The least common cause, but the one people fear most. Even here, it’s rarely the whole board that’s gone, it’s usually one small component in the charging circuit that we can replace on the bench rather than swapping the entire motherboard, which is the difference between a component repair and a very large invoice.

Why we don’t guess over the phone

Every one of those causes looks identical from the outside: a laptop that won’t power on. That’s why we don’t quote blind. The $85 inspection is our minimum labour charge, it buys a proper bench diagnosis where we test the charger output, the port continuity, the battery, and the board itself, and a technician starts that diagnosis within two to three hours of your HP reaching us. You get a phone call with a written quote before anything is repaired, so there are no surprises when you pick it up.

Turnaround and what to expect

A charger or battery swap, once diagnosed, is usually same-day to 24 hours if the part is on the shelf. Port and board-level work is bench work we do in-house, and if a specific part needs ordering it typically lands within two to three business days. Every repair leaves with a written workmanship warranty, whichever of the causes above turns out to be yours.

Don’t write it off yet

We see plenty of HPs that arrive as “the laptop is dead” and leave the same day with nothing more than a new charger. Before you start shopping for a replacement, get a quote or call us on 08 9325 1196, and let a proper inspection tell you which of these four things you’re actually dealing with.
